Maximum Gas Pressure
Hi all,
I use an MCR-1, and my machine runs on propane gas with a regulator valve that I ordered from Mill City. The maximum pressure level is set at 3.5 kPa maximum, according to the factory recommendations. I'm currently roasting a blend from northern Peru with good density and different sized beans. My best roast times roasting a full batch are using an initial gas pressure of 3.5 kPa, low airflow at the beginning, gradually increasing it, and a 400 F° charge temperature. However, the maximum ROR peak is 12 C°. I'm wondering if even using the maximum gas level set by the factory is still insufficient to quickly transfer heat to the bean and obtain a faster recovery post-turning point? Would it be possible to increase the maximum gas pressure to 4 or 4.5 kPa to obtain a higher ROR?
any reason why you're charging so low?
If you have good density bump that up to 450-465
Hmmm that's awfully low for tipping. I'd boost up the drum speed. I'm on a 2D and run it at 72 rpm. Is the MCR-1's drum speed adjustable?
Take another look at your airflow. It may be that you are running more fuel and a much hotter incoming air temp because your airflow is pulling too much heat out of the roaster. You have to balance applied heat, airflow, drum speed, preheat and batch size all against each other relative to the characteristics of your specific machine installation. None of these settings are obvious. It can be tricky. This is exactly why we teach them in class.
